What is roof area calculation?
Roof area calculation helps determine the actual surface area of a roof by considering its pitch angle. This is crucial for:
- Roofing material estimation
- Solar panel installation planning
- Waterproofing coverage
- Cost estimation for repairs or replacement
Instructions
Enter the base dimensions of your roof
Select or enter the roof pitch angle
Choose your preferred measurement units
Review the calculated actual roof area
Add extra material for overlaps and waste (typically 10-15%)
Common Roof Pitch Guide
Roof pitch is typically expressed as a ratio of rise over run (e.g., 4:12) or as an angle in degrees. Here are some common roof pitches and their applications:
Flat Roof (0-2°)
Common in commercial buildings and modern homes. Requires special waterproofing. Pitch ratio: 0.5:12 or less
Low Slope (2-10°)
Often used in ranch-style homes and porches. Pitch ratio: 1:12 to 2:12
Conventional (15-30°)
Most common in residential construction. Pitch ratio: 4:12 to 7:12
Steep Slope (>30°)
Found in Tudor, Victorian, and Gothic architecture. Pitch ratio: 8:12 or greater
